Michigan State Unclaimed Property Search

The Michigan Department of Treasury runs the statewide unclaimed property program under the Michigan Uniform Unclaimed Property Act. Banks, insurers, employers, utilities, and other businesses must turn over funds they can no longer deliver to their owners. Once the state receives those funds, they stay on file until the owner claims them. There is no time limit. The state has returned more than $675 million to Michigan residents and continues to hold hundreds of millions more.

Michigan's free unclaimed property search is at unclaimedproperty.michigan.gov.

Tax Foreclosure Surplus Funds in Macomb County

When Macomb County forecloses on a property for unpaid taxes and then sells it at auction for more than the amount owed, the extra money is called a surplus. Under Michigan law, specifically MCL 211.78t, the former owner has a right to claim that surplus. The county is required to notify the previous owner. But if you don't respond, those funds may not automatically come to you.

To claim surplus funds from a Macomb County tax foreclosure sale, you must file Form 5743 (Motion to Claim Remaining Proceeds). The deadline to file is July 1 of the year following the foreclosure. File with the Macomb County Circuit Court. Missing the deadline means losing your right to the surplus.

The process requires you to identify the parcel, the sale date, and the amount of surplus. You may need to provide proof of ownership at the time of foreclosure. If you are unsure how to file, a legal aid organization can help you understand the process at no cost.

Note that MCL 211.78t only applies to Macomb County's standard tax foreclosure process. Wayne County has a different system. Since Macomb Township is in Macomb County, the Form 5743 / July 1 deadline applies here.
